The Day the Music Died
Parent's Weekend again, and the one thing I cannot let go of is:
What on God's great earth happened to our Regimental Band?!
I've heard marching to the beat of a different drum is a good thing, but not during a parade! Either all of Band Company's talent graduated with last year's class, everyone swapped instruments as a prank, or the new MAJ ... well, I just don't know.

Granted, I don't know a thing about running a marching band - I can't even whistle - but I know what bad sounds like. I especially know what bad sounds like in comparison to GOOD, like it was for the past three years.

Honestly, I'd like to add how much I now appreciate the Band Co's of the past - help out your underclassmen before the Regiment buys a soundtrack.
On the upside, the Parade went smoothly. Kudos to the succinct and articulate speeches. Bravisimo.
That's all I have for today, it's fifteen minutes until Happy Hour!

A lot of things are contributing to the demise of the sound of the band.
1. Most of the class that graduated last year had little to no talent so they aren't really the issue.
2. The most important and costly point is the lack of actual equipment and instruments. I'm a tuba player in the band and my instrument is literally held together with scotch tape. I'm not even joking at all. Major Smith, who knows exactly what he is doing, just sent in a $140,000 budget for new tubas which cost $6,000 each for an average one, drums, and other instruments. The ones we have are old and falling apart. These instruments play a vital part in how the band sounds. Shitty instruments equal a shitty sound.
3. One other factor is the lack of rehearsal time. In order to get good at what you do you obviously need to practice. With the schedule this year being as screwed up as it is, the little rehearsal time we used to have is now diminished even further.
That is why the band is sounding like shit.
