Good luck!

Tut, Tut, Looks Like Rank

It has been recently brought to my attention that we are back to disputing petty matters of little importance pertaining to, of all things - Cadet Rank. As oxymoronic as that sounds, Cadet Rank is exactly that - NUCC bling bling.

It doesn't make you smarter.

It doesn't make you a better leader by virtue of pinning more points on your collar.

It doesn't mean you make better decisions.

It doesn't earn respect of subordinates.

It certainly doesn't mean that because you drag around a heavy collar that you have outperformed the rest of the masses.

"You hypocrite, woman!" you cry, "You have rank yourself!"

Ah, yes. But would you know it?

Corps Rank matters in the Corps (duh, you live here), not outside the machine.

Do you know what the whole rank structure is for? Organization. It gives everyone a place to stand so no one gets lost, and a job to do so that everything gets done. That's it. In a perfect world, the people with certain skills get jobs that they will best perform at, benefiting the organization. Makes sense, doesn't it?

What this is, is a warning to all of you with rank, aspiring to have rank, or watching the people around you with rank. Certain things like treating people with decency and respect cannot be exchanged for something shiny. No one will respect a leader just because he or she is in charge. Respect the position of authority, yes, the person in it - not necessarily.

In the same vain, if you have certain responsibilities that are not being met, then by all means give them to someone with a little more drive, because what good are you doing to the whole? The idea is to maximize efficiency, not create a hierarchy of megalomaniacs.

Putting all of this in perspective -

You step off campus and your Corps "rank" means nothing. If you learn nothing about core values here, and your rank in the Corps is all you have to hold on to, you're going to be in a sad, sad position when the real world hits you.

SMACK!

That's the sound of the real world bitch-slapping you in the face.

Corps rank does not matter in the long run. It's what you take away from the experience that matters.

When all is said and done, your diploma is going to read "MCV" whether your last year was spent as a SSG or the COL.

Don't complain too much about the system though, because let's face it - you're still here!

SCREECH!!!!

Seems like there's some confusion about this post. I'm taking inbound fire.

If you need to reread it (or read it entirely) please do so. Take note! While your rank doesn't make a lick of difference outside of Norwich, you still need to respect the system you're choosing to live in. I thought I made that clear. If you hate it, leave. My point is, don't "pull rank" or let "fake" chevrons go to your head when you're in the ... ah, real world.

This isn't pointing fingers. Everyone knows people that do it, and I'm not about to name names. This was not meant to:

A. Bash people with multiple chevrons and stars (hello ... C/MAJ here!)
B. Bash people without multiple chevrons (hi, been a PVT)
C. Bash the Corps (live there!)
D. Start drama / uprising / collective whatever (there's enough going on without my helping)

So don't take it that way!

And All That Jazz ...

This catch-up post of NU Daily will be multi-faceted to contain many different areas of rant.

First of all - the parking. Holy crowded, Batman. There are zero spaces in the upper/lower lots and even the princess lot is packed. This screws the commuter students because the residents have no other options as well. Hey, that's what you get for commuting. No one wants to park in the back of any of the lots because of the crazy tire-slashing townies. You think I'm kidding ...

Second, I have a message from several angry Alumni who have approached me. The new mascots suck, and Norwich never contacted the Alums to mention that they were CHANGING the mascot in the first place, or to ask for input as to a new one. Needless to say, THEY DON'T LIKE IT. Come on guys, Johnny Bravo does not stand up to Sarge.

(C) NU, apparently ...

Did we know WHY the mascot needed to be changed? Apparently, Texas A&M had put in a copyright for the image that both our schools happen to use. Bastards. Thanks, NU.

Third, the ring policy. If you refer to page 64 of your nifty new planners, you will see some of the most insane rubbish I have ever seen in writing. Apparently, someone read my post on the Ring fiasco and took it IN THE COMPLETE WRONG DIRECTION.

Let's think about this logically. A student can be a civilian abroad for a year - not cut their hair, not wear a uniform, grow out the face fuzz and be a general hippie - and that counts as 'time in the Corps' because they are 'representing the Norwich community.' Great, grand, wonderful - I'm all about diversity and cultural awareness and all that doo-doo.

(stolen from here)

BUT!!!!!

A cadet who is also a SOLDIER (which is citizen-soldier ... but REAL) can get deployed, wear a uniform every day, SERVE THEIR COUNTRY, and put their life on the line ... but THAT doesn't count. At all. They don't 'represent the Norwich community'? You've GOT to be kidding me. "We respect the fact that ..." COME ON. You people need to get your heads out of your fourth point of contact.

Robbed from here.

Yes, it's cute that you added the 'have all your credits and will graduate on time' rule because I made such a ruckus with you. However, did you not hear a THING that I said? Obviously, since I already have my ring, this policy doesn't affect me, but this is just offensive. So much for support your troops.

You cannot look me in the eye with a straight face and tell me, honestly, that "time in service is not equivalent to time in the Corps of Cadets." You Ring Committee types need to realize that real soldiers are a far cry from 'cadets' and time in service constitutes real training. I am appalled and disgusted. If you think I'm alone, talk to some real veterans. The ones who are being screwed by a group with a case of naivete.

*deep breath*

NEXT.

The award of last week goes to an MSII cadet who actually had to seek medical attention for getting an earplug (yellow foam type) lodged in his ear. Good job, that it utterly ridiculous. I am fascinated by the continual display of "duuuuuuuuuuh .... " at this university.

Oh there's more, but I should save the rest for a later date when in need of update material.

My last note ... don't get me started on the ban of service BDUs. Just don't get me started. Don't.

Crazy Townies on the Loose

First off, let me promise that I was planning a far different entry for tonight, and I realize that NU Daily has been far from Daily as of late. Let me promise to me more faithful in updates from here on out, and excuse my slacking to the hectic start of classes, three jobs, and utter BS.

So I will document the utter BS from now on.

I would hate to have Guard Duty tonight...

Usually we joke about protecting Norwich from invading Canadians, but here's a real world lockdown with a crazy, gun-wielding Northfield townie who apparently has issues with males ... ah yes, the drama never ends.

Now we are walking in pairs because of a 6'2" menacing arms dealer with a mission? Very interesting.

Maybe I'm too callous from my bad experiences with gun-toting miscreants and misbehaving delinquents with sidearms (no, not ALL of them were ex-boyfriends), but I am relatively unphased by this. But this site isn't about me, is it?

You children are FREAKING OUT. If you had any idea how many STUDENTS have been caught with weapons on campus after threatening the lives of others, you'd invest in some firearms yourself. *cough cough* MY freshman year ... full auto rifle *cough* I'm actually rather insulted - I never received special treatment like a lockdown when I almost died... Humph!

Ha - and I thought the biggest news on campus was the shenanigans in the Periodical Room. Oh yes, that's public knowledge. More on that another time.

Or maybe not.

I'll leave you all to cower in your rooms with the doors locked.
